Officials at Donegal County Council have been asked to consider the erection of speed ramps on the Astoria Road and Atlantic Way in Bundoran.

This follows a request from Cllr Michael McMahon (SF) at the April meeting of the Donegal Municipal District, who said that the recent Easter Holiday weekend had once again highlighted that there were serious issues with excess speed on those roads, in particular.

He also asked if there was a possibility of limiting speed on the town's Main Street, but this was ruled out as an option, by officials.

Cllr McMahon said that the speeding in Bundoran over the weekend was obvious at those locations, where there was a lot of business in that area.

He had even witnessed it himself that morning in advance of the MD meeting.

It had also been an issue regarding traffic management in the town that had been repeatedly raised with members of 'Discover Bundoran'.

While he accepted that ramps on the Main Street would be ruled on health and safety grounds, to allow the flow of emergency services vehicles, he felt that the problem area closer to the seashore could be looked at.

Describing it as a "serious situation and an accident waiting to happen'', he said that “something needed to be done”.

Acting area manager for roads and transport, Mark Sweeney said that due to the town's Main Street being a "designated regional road", ramps would not be an option.

However, his team were prepared to look at some speed mitigation options for the areas that Cllr McMahon had asked about.

At the same meeting, Mr Sweeney was also asked by Cllr McMahon to consider safety railings being erected in the vicinity of the Olympic Amusements, particularly for child  safety protection and in light of a new family arcade exclusively aimed at young families with children, being opened over Easter.

He said that safety railing were currently in situ on the opposite side of the road, but he felt this would bring added security and safety for families visiting the towns, as well as locals, on the Olympic side of the Main Street.
