Josepha Madigan, the Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, was in St Johnston on Friday to see at first hand two programmes that are running in the border village.
St Baithin’s National School are holding a Summer Programme and DEIS Literacy and Numeracy camps over the next two weeks.
Minister Madigan was in Donegal on Friday and paid a visit to St Baithin’s NS, where she was accompanied by the new Mayor of Donegal, Councillor Martin Harley and Councillor John McGuinness.
The Summer Programme is offered to pupils with complex needs. The theme of this year’s programme is ‘Building Confidence and Connections’. The range of activities offered during the programme focus on student-centred, play-based engagement.
The DEIS Literacy and Numeracy Camp focuses on literacy and numeracy and provides four hours of instruction each day.
The lessons are highly engaging for the pupils with lots of playful learning experiences. As well as class-based activities, there are lots of trips and sporting opportunities for the pupils.
Two teachers and four special needs assistants are working on the Summer Programme with two teachers delivering the DEIS Literacy and Numeracy camp.
St Baithin’s NS principal Ann Marie Meehan welcomed the delegation to the school alongside Maurice Toland, a member of the school’s Board of Management.
