An investigation has been launched into what is believed to be a major drugs find in Donegal.
Substantial quantities of a substance, believed to be cocaine bound for communities across the county, were found by gardai at locations off the coast near Dunfanaghy and Fanad.
Donegal Live understands that gardai have been monitoring the potential trafficking of illegal drugs into the county in recent days.
The operation has been trained on marine vessels in the Atlantic Ocean. On Wednesday morning, officers found ‘a number of packages’ washed up along the coastline.
The packages washed up at remote locations and their contents will be sent for analysis.
A spokesperson for the Garda Press Office told Donegal Live: “The packages contain substance which is believed to be a controlled drug, subject to analysis and confirmation by Forensic Science Ireland (FSI).
“An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”
The nature of the substance has yet to be confirmed. Although Gardai are remaining tight-lipped, a source described the find as ’significant’ in the fight against drugs in the county.
