In Pictures: Rain fails to dampen dragon spirits at rescheduled regatta

The event was a huge success on and off the water for the hosting Donegal club

Donegal Dragons came in for much praise for the success of their dragon boat regatta after unfavourable weather conditions led to a last minute change of date.

The event had been due to take place at Donegal Town pier on Saturday, but a small craft weather warning and strong westerly winds meant it could not go ahead.

With so many people travelling for the event - including a full crew who had arrived from Canada - the decision was taken to hold it on Sunday instead of simply cancelling. This last minute reorganisation took a huge effort on the part of the organising committee, with support and cooperation from everyone involved.

A great day of racing and entertainment was enjoyed by all.

On the water, it was new team Belfast Phoenix Warriors who were victorious. This is their second victory in their first racing season, and the stage has been set for some fantastic battles with this new crew in the future.

Second home in the major final were Dublin Vikings, another strong crew who are in superb form at the moment.

And for the home crowd, there was overwhelming pride as the junior Donegal Dolphins finished third overall. As the only youth crew (aged 11 to 18), they were competing on equal terms with adult crews. They raced their hearts out and were thoroughly deserving of this highly coveted place in the Major Final.

There was also success for the host club in the Minor Final, with Donegal Dragons Inspire winning the final and ensuring that the Corley Cup stayed in Donegal.

Second place went to the Khaleesi composite team made up of paddlers from Donegal Dragons and a number of visiting paddlers.

Third place in the minor final were West Island Dragons who had travelled all the way from Canada.

Next up for Donegal Dragons is the Irish Dragon Boat Association’s main event of the year, a two-day regatta taking place at Lough Rinn in Leitrim in September.

More information on the club’s activities - including contact details for anyone who would like to get involved - can be found on the Donegal Dragons Facebook page.
