The death has taken place of noted Gaoth Dobhair radio broadcaster Seán Diver.

For 20 years, he was a popular voice on the airwaves with RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta until he retired in 2014.

He was a regular behind the mic for Cás Ceirín and was a popular figure at Gaelic football matches, while regularly voicing the sports results on RnaG.

From Coshclady, Bunbeg, Seán lived a varied live and he joined the Revenue after completing his Leaving Certificate, initially becoming an assistant preventions officer.

He worked in Rosslare Harbour, Cahirciveen in Kerry and Ballyshannon before moving to Wales where he worked as a bandsman in an open cast coal mine in 1968.

When the industrial estate in Gaoth Dobhair opened, Seán was one of the first employees in 1969, working as a stores supervisor for GT Carpets.

He also had spells with AT&T and IMED and he had a huge role with the Credit Union in west Donegal. He was instrumental in the development of the Credit Unions in Gaoth Dobhair, Rosses and Falctrragh.

When Conal Ó Dubhthaigh left his role in RnaG, Seán began to appear more often.

Radio presenting became a real passion. In 2014, he told the Donegal Democrat: “I loved it. As I said when they made me a presentation ‘Don’t you’s let on, but I’d have done it for nothing’.”

His peaceful death occurred on Wednesday at his home. He was predeceased by his wife Sarah and his parents May and Eddie.

Seán is survived by his daughter Deirdre, sons Antoin, Declan, Adrian and Sean, daughters-in-law Kerry and Louise, grandchildren Kieran, Grace, Hugh and Maitiu, brother Joe and his sisters Maire Diver, Breege Williams, Ann Ferry, Kit Keating and Gráinne Diver.

HIs funeral details have yet to be confirmed.
