Gerry Harkin from Falcarragh
Renowned Donegal artist, Leanne McLaughlin, is set to captivate audiences with her thought-provoking short film, The Futurist, which will be showcased at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).
This compelling film offers a profound glimpse into the life and legacy of fourth-generation
farmer Gerry Harkin, shedding light on his enduring connection with the land that sustains him. Gerry Harkin lives in Falcarragh and Leanne lives in Gortahork.
The Futurist delves deep into Gerry Harkin’s personal journey as a small Irish farmer, encapsulating his family’s farming heritage and their unwavering dedication to the land. With heartfelt storytelling and breathtaking cinematography, the film provides viewers with a poignant perspective on the symbiotic relationship between man and the environment.
Gerry Harkin, the central figure in The Futurist, reflects on his family’s farming legacy while looking towards the future. He shares his personal experiences, valuable insights, and words of wisdom that have been passed down through generations. Through Gerry’s eyes, viewers are invited to contemplate their own connection with the world around them and the impact of their daily actions on the environment.
The film also features a soul-stirring song composed by Gerry’s mother, Sarah Harkin, which beautifully encapsulates the rich history of Cloughaneely Parish, where the Harkin family has farmed for over three centuries. Leanne McLaughlin, not only the filmmaker but also a gifted musician, provides the vocals and original music for this documentary. She describes the song as a unique treasure, penned by a young Irish girl during a time when environmental concerns were not at the forefront of public consciousness.
“A blow in from Derry, People often ask me why I have stayed in Donegal. Yes the county is rich in culture, music and art, but what keeps me here is the people, people like Gerry. I am honoured and blessed to call Gerry my friend and thankful that Gerry has permitted me to create this film. I hope I have managed to catch the light and kindness of his character and a little of his humour.”
The Futurist by Leanne McLaughlin will be featured at the Irish Museum of Modern Art as part of Earth Rising, offering visitors a profound and moving experience that encourages reflection on our environmental responsibilities.
The exhibition runs from September 21 – September 24.
