Donegal Sinn Féin held a tribute night in honey of iconic Republican Pat Doherty and his wife May on Saturday.
Over 500 people attended a sell-out function at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny with patrons traveling from the United States, England and Scotland to salute the popular Carrigart couple.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald gave a speech on the night while Pat Doherty addressed the crowd. Video messages from incoming First Minister Michelle O’Neill and former party leader, Gerry Adams were played.
As well as focusing on the lifetime of contributions made by the Dohertys, the addresses looked to the future, to upcoming political campaigns and to bringing about a united Ireland.
“Throughout his tenure as Vice President of Sinn Féin, Pat Doherty consistently demonstrated his commitment to achieving peace and reconciliation in Ireland,” Donegal Sinn Féin said.
“He played a pivotal role in the historic Good Friday Agreement and his ability to foster dialogue and build bridges across communities was instrumental in reaching a consensus, demonstrating his deep-rooted belief in the power of dialogue and negotiation.
“Pat’s ability to navigate the often-challenging landscape of peace negotiations showcased his skilful diplomacy and unwavering dedication to finding resolutions that brought lasting benefits to all.

Mary was born in Castlebar in County Mayo and emigrated to Glasgow just after World War 2. She returned to Donegal in 1967 and the couple raised five children. As a mature student, she obtained a Masters in Irish History and Politics from University of Ulster, Magee.
Their daughter, Maria, contested the local elections in 2019. She polled 752 votes having been nominated by the Carrigart Sinn Féin cumann.
Donegal Sinn Féin said: ”Pat Doherty's political career was characterised by his unwavering advocacy for social justice and equality. He championed the rights of marginalised communities and worked tirelessly to address issues such as poverty, discrimination, and inequality.
