Worries over speeding on busy Glenswilly road

Concerns have been raised over speeding traffic on a busy Glenswilly road.

Donegal County Council has confirmed that a safety assessment will be carried out between Foxhall and the Rashedog junction.

Councillor Michael McBride brought the matter to this month’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Councillor McBride proposed a reduction of the current 80km/h speed limit ‘in the interest of health and safety due to the heavy volume of traffic at peak times’.

While Donegal County said that criteria in the current speed limit guidelines would not recommend a change, the local authority said that a safety assessment can be conducted ‘to identify the issues and possible options for improvement’.

“We have to figure out some way of slowing the traffic,” Councillor McBride said. “Something needs to be done there. When you have game times at the Glenswilly GAA grounds and the car park is full, there could be cars parked down the lane and the school also isn’t too far away from it.”

His motion was seconded by Councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly who said he previously had a similar motion to the MD.

“If there is anything extra that can be done, it would be welcomed,” Councillor Kelly said. “People have every right to be concerned because the corners there are blind and dangerous.”
