Brian Carr has vowed to 'get the sleeves rolled up' after being co-opted onto Donegal County Council.
The Glenties native has been officially co-opted onto the Council to replace outgoing Sinn Féin Councillor Marie Therese Gallagher.
His co-option was formally proposed at Wednesday's meeting of Donegal County Council in Lifford.
Councillor Carr will contest the forthcoming Local Election in June and replaces Councillor Gallagher, who has confirmed that she is not seeking re-election having served on the Council since 2007.
“I firstly want to thank my friend, Marie Therese Gallagher, for handing me the reins and giving me this opportunity,” Councillor Carr said.
“Marie Therese has set the standard for what a County Councillor in this area should be and I plan to continue where she left off.
“I can’t wait to get the sleeves rolled up and get to work for the people of this area It is such a great honour to be representing my local area on the council.”
Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty said Councillor Carr would be 'a strong republican voice on the council and a committed representative for his local area'.
“He also brings a wealth of experience with him having been involved in community work as well as grassroots activism for the party for many years,” Deputy Doherty said.
"He has been doing the work of a councillor for a very long time now and I have no doubts that he will make a fantastic councillor. He lives and breathes community work
"I would also like to take this opportunity to again thank outgoing councillor Marie Therese Gallagher and thank her for all she has done for her local area and the party in Donegal."
