The owners of Donegal Donkey Sanctuary in Raphoe faced a terrifying ordeal when threatened by a person attempting to steal donation tins.

What made this even more frightening is that there appeared to be a degree of planning involved.

The matter has been reported to gardaí, who have confirmed that they are investigating the incident.

Donegal Donkey Sanctuary posted on Facebook on Tuesday evening: “We’ve had the most awful experience here at the sanctuary this evening. Around 8.30pm a white car dropped this individual off at the end of our road.

“He walked right up to our car park which is quite a distance and attempted to steal the collection tins at the car park.

“When  confronted as to what he was doing he became very threatening and tried to stop me filming. As I followed him down the road the car sped off leaving him behind and he threatened me again by coming right up to me.

“I was very shaken at this stage and had no choice but to watch him walk away.

“The gardaí have been to the sanctuary and have taken a statement.

“We are just devastated by this experience and cannot believe that something like this can happen at 8.30 on a quiet summer evening.

“What sort of person tries to steal from an animal sanctuary? Just devastating.”

Gardaí confirmed that they were alerted to an an incident at a premises in Raphoe on Tuesday evening, June 25.

The garda spokesperson said: “No items were taken from the premises. Enquiries are ongoing.”

There has been a huge outpouring of anger, shock and support for Donegal Donkey Sanctuary.

The facility at Castledooey, Raphoe is run by Danny and Sandra Curran who rely on donations to run the sanctuary.

In recent times they have been working round the clock to hard rear a baby donkey which was rejected at birth by her mother, who is also receiving care.

Baby Rose has captured the hearts of the sanctuary’s followers, and daily updates on her progress have shown just how dedicated Danny and Sandra are to the donkeys in their care.

More information on the facility and how to support its work can be found on the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary Facebook page
