Fines for three men arrested for being drunk and a danger to themselves

Convictions and fines were imposed on three men who were each charged with being drunk to the extent of being a danger to themselves or others.

John McDonagh, 56, of 20 Silverwood, Ballybofey and Patrick Ward, 30, of SuperValu Carpark, Drumacrin, Bundoran were before Ballyshannon DIstrict Court on Friday, January 19. 

Brian Ward, 38, of 10 Cnoc Glas, Boyle was unable to attend but was represented by solicitor Gerry McGovern, as were the other two men.

All three pleaded guilty to the offence which took place  at Derrynaseer, Askill, Kinlough, County Leitrim on January 5, 2025. 

In giving evidence for each case, Inspector Anthony Coyle told the court that at 00.15am, gardaí observed the defendants walking on the road near a parked vehicle. 

“It was a poorly lit area,” he said. 

The defendants were observed to be highly intoxicated and unsteady on their feet. They were arrested for their own safety and the safety of others, and brought to Ballyshannon Garda Station.

Judge Ciaran LIddy fined each of the defendants €100.
