Tributes paid to ‘passionate and dedicated’ Fort Dunree manager David Magee 

David Magee, who was the manager of the museum at Fort Dunree for 22 years, has been remembered as an inspiring and co-operative figure in tourism in Inishowen

David Magee has been remembered as a being passionate about Fort Dunree and his community

Tributes have been paid following the sudden passing of David Magee, the manager of the Fort Dunree museum.

From Buncrana and the manager of the museum for 22 years, he was known for his passion for Fort Dunree and his dedication to his community, and was a driving force behind plans to improve the attraction.

The team at the museum said that as a mark of respect to their colleague and friend, Fort Dunree will remain closed until Monday, January 27.

Cathaoirleach of the Inishowen Municipal District, Cllr Jack Murray, said the untimely passing “is a shock to everyone in Inishowen”.

“He was a gentleman, mild mannered, civil, as well as being extremely passionate and dedicated to making his community a better place,” he said.

“He was committed to the Dunree project and any conversation I had with him normally focused on his ambitions for that amazing place.

“He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and I know that everyone in the local community are holding his family in our thoughts at such a difficult and tragic time."

Local tourism body Go Visit Inishowen said  Mr Magee “was at the forefront of inspiring, advising and helping everyone involved in tourism here in Inishowen”.

“Always available for a chat, to pitch in and always with a smile and a joke even in the face adversity."

Inishowen Development Partnership said Mr Magee’s “diligence and loyalty did not go unnoticed”.

“David your kindness, generosity, hard-working  and co-operative spirit accompanied by your quiet wit will be sadly missed.”

Wild Inishowen Club said its committee members were “deeply saddened at the sudden death of our dear friend”.

Inishowen Maritime Museum described Mr Magee as a “friend and colleague”who will be sorely missed.

“David worked closely with us over the years and was always willing to help us out. Many conversations and laughs were had about the ups and downs of museum life.”

Mr Magee is survived by his wife Monica, brothers Damien and Terence, sisters Brenda and Carol and predeceased by his parents Rita and Gerard, brothers Shaun and Gerry and sisters Bernie and Marian.

His requiem Mass will take place at the Sacred Heart Church, Muff on Saturday, January 25 at 11am with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
