The late Ollie and Martin Horgan
The Galway Sports Awards committee has announced that the 2025 Galway Sports Award for soccer will be jointly awarded to the late Ollie Horgan and the late Martin Horgan, in recognition of their outstanding and lasting contributions to the game.
Salthill native Ollie was a maths, science and technical drawing teacher at St Eunan’s College since 1989 and managed Fanad United and Finn Harps whilst living in Letterkenny before serving as assistant manager to John Caulfield at Galway United last season. Ollie passed away last August.
In January 2024, Ollie’s brother Martin, who also loved football from his time at St Mary’s College in Galway and Maree Oranmore FC, died suddenly.

"As well as co-founding Maree Oranmore FC and serving in numerous different administrative roles in the club, Martin won numerous Galway and Connacht titles as a coach with Maree Oranmore FC, including four U21 Premier Division titles in a row," the Galway club posted. "He also won over 25 Connacht FAI schools “A” titles and over 10 All-Ireland “A” Schools titles with St.Mary’s College as a coach, and co-founded Knocknacarra FC."
In announcing the award, the Galway Sports Awards committee said the decision to honour both men posthumously was a reflection of the enormous respect in which they are held and the legacy they leave behind. The joint award is intended not only to celebrate their achievements but also to acknowledge the inspiration they provided to so many within the soccer community.
The 2025 Galway Sports Awards ceremony will include a special tribute to Martin Horgan and Ollie Horgan, ensuring their contributions to soccer in Galway - and indeed Donegal - are remembered and celebrated for years to come.
