Inishowen’s own 9 Hazel Trees have officially confirmed they are cleared for departure to Uganda.
Hailing from the Inishowen Peninsula, 9 Hazel Trees - made up of Des McGonigle, Mickey Herron, Louise Doherty and Gary Raymond - are known for their vibrant sound and commitment to social causes. This Ugandan tour marks a significant chapter in their history, blending cultural exchange with humanitarian aid.
The celebrated local band is embarking on a high-stakes, 10-day humanitarian and musical mission to support vital projects in food, medicine, and education.

Despite the "uncertain few days" regarding their travel arrangements, the group’s spirits remain high as they prepare to represent the Northwest on an international stage.
The itinerary for 9 Hazel Trees is as ambitious as it is heart-centered. Over the course of 10 days, the band will perform for thousands, ranging from intimate school visits to high-level diplomatic functions.
Key highlights of the tour include collaborations in making music alongside the world-renowned African Children’s Choir and the transformative Brass for Africa initiative; headlining the official St. Patrick’s Day celebrations at the Irish Embassy in Kampala; entertaining audiences at functions attended by various Heads of State and bringing music to local schools and providing comfort with performances at a regional hospice.
Beyond the music, the trip serves as a fundraising mission and a firsthand look at the impact of Irish Aid projects. The band will be visiting several sites to see how Irish contributions are supporting education and healthcare on the ground.
"We are so relieved to finally be on our way," said a spokesperson for the band. "After the uncertainty of the last few days, we are just looking forward to seeing all our friends in Uganda and, most importantly, making music with the children. That’s where the real magic happens."
