Irish neutrality talk to be hosted by former MEPs in Donegal

Clare Daly and Mick Wallace, former MEPs, are hosting a talk on Irish neutrality in Donegal. 

The event will take place in Scioból an Phobail, Mín na Craoibhe, Anagaire at 7pm on Tuesday, March 24. 

Organised by Independent Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig, the session titled “Neutrality Will Keep Us Living” aims to highlight the importance of retaining neutrality and what can be done to protect it. 

“This is a really important meeting, because of the war raging in the Middle East,” Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig told DonegalLive. “It is a very concerning time, so I would hugely encourage people to come along and be informed. We need to protect our neutrality and the idea of spending billions on weapons to kill other people - it's a shocking and dangerous time.”

Neutrality is the policy of military non-alignment, upheld by the Triple Lock, which requires the approval of the United Nations, the Government, and the Dáil for overseas troop deployment.

Daly and Wallace have had a close political association since 2012. Establishing a registered political party, Independents4Change, in 2014. Daly and Wallace are closely aligned in their anti-war and anti-imperialist stances, as well as in their opposition to NATO and support for Irish neutrality. 

In 2019, Daly and Wallace were elected as MEPs and became part of The Left group in the European Parliament. The former MEPs lost their seat in the 2024 European Parliament elections.
