Students from Scoil Náisiúnta Árainn Mhór, Scoil Athphoirt National School and Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada joined Clean Coasts on two separate beaches for three coastal workshops on Arranmore, as part of the Clean Coasts Roadshow of events for 2026.

The first workshop kicked off with 13 students from Scoil Náisiúnta Árainn Mhór on Leabgarrow beach. This session focused on coastal awareness, local heritage and the importance of beach cleaning.

The students were asked to act as coastal detectives and were divided into two groups: one to record what they saw and found on the beach and at a rock pool, while the other group did a beach clean-up. They then grouped back together and discussed the findings and what they had learned.

Next up, Clean Coasts were joined by 14 students from Scoil Athphoirt National School, which overlooks Trá Athphort. The students learned about marram grass and its importance in the dune systems, as well as the wildlife on the strand and what to be mindful of. Afterwards, they carried out a beach clean where several bags of rubbish were collected.

To end the day, the third session was back at Leabgarrow beach with 10 Transition Year students from Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada. Students learned about local coastal biodiversity and were shown the different kelp and seaweeds on the shore, learning also about their uses and benefits. The group were then split in two, with one group observing and learning about wildlife on the shore, and the other carrying out a beach clean.

Auriel Robinson, Donegal Clean Coasts officer, said, “The day was a great success and those who participated were left with a sense of pride and appreciation of their beautiful and precious island. It is so important for the younger generations to learn about their coastline and what help is needed to secure a clean ocean for the future.’.

Environmental enthusiasts on Arramore Island joined together to participate in a National Spring Clean event on the island. This event was organised by manager, John McCafferty of CCFAM (Arranmore Development and Employment Co-Op), which is also a Clean Coasts Group and worked alongside Arranmore Island Clean Coasts Group under the leadership of Peter O’ Donnell.

The Clean Coasts Roadshow is a series of informative talks and workshops tailored for coastal communities across Ireland, taking place between January and May each year. This initiative brings together individuals interested in protecting their local beaches, seas, and marine environments.

The Roadshow events cover a range of topics, including biodiversity, dune systems, marine litter, wildlife, sustainable developments, and the work of local groups and organisations. These events also serve as a platform for community groups to discuss practical matters, such as building volunteer capacity, attracting new members, and sharing responsibilities.
