A large crowd gathered in Buncrana for the annual Palm Sunday procession, braving cold and blustery conditions to take part in a tradition that holds deep religious and historical significance in the area.
The event, which took place on Sunday, March 29, marked Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week in the Christian calendar.
Led by Buncrana Parish Priest Fr Francis Bradley and Fr Paddy Baker, the procession began at Ned’s Point and made its way along the scenic route to Fr Hegarty’s Rock.
Along the journey, participants took part in the Stations of the Cross, reflecting on the final hours of Christ’s life against the backdrop of Lough Swilly.

Fr Hegarty’s Rock holds a special place in local history, traditionally believed to have been used as a Mass rock during Penal times when Catholic worship was restricted. Its location as the final destination of the procession connected modern-day worshippers with the faith and resilience of earlier generations.
Despite the challenging weather, organisers noted a strong turnout, highlighting the enduring importance of the Palm Sunday procession in Buncrana’s religious and cultural life.
This year’s observance drew a strong turnout, with prayers and blessings taking place against the backdrop of Lough Swilly.
