The long-awaited re-opening of a path through the Drumboe Woods in Stranorlar is to take place later today.

The path, which leads from the Finn Valley College into the town, had been closed for over thirteen years due to health and safety concerns raised by the Donegal ETB.

After years of lobbying from local Councillors, work has been carried out by Coillte and Donegal County Council in recent months to ensure that the path is returned to a safe state.

At today's meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District Council, Councillor Martin Harley confirmed that the path will be formally opened to the public once again this afternoon.

"I'd like to thank Kathleen McGowan, James Kelly and Paddy Doherty and all the team in the Community Section there for all their work in getting this project over the line. It's been a long time in waiting, but thank God we're there now."

"I know the public and the community in that area are looking forward to the walkway being opened."

"It's going to be a great addition, and I also want to publicly thank Coillte for the works that they have done in the woods; they've had a contractor working there over the last number of weeks doing works as well."

"This is a great addition to the community, our MD and to the Twin Towns."
