Local councillors are opposed to plans to demolish social housing apartments in Dungloe due to the housing crisis in the area

County councillors are to meet with representatives of a housing association over plans to demolish a block of 16 apartments in Dungloe.

Most of the apartments at the Cois Locha complex on Gweedore Road, which provide independent living, have been vacant in recent years. The apartment complex was built by Clúid Housing and the Health Service Executive (HSE)  around 20 years ago. The HSE has said the apartments require remedial work and it had been in discussions with Clúid in recent years about restoring the apartment complex to full use. Clúid has developed plans to convert the apartments into 12 houses.

Local councillors say the apartments are needed to deal with the housing crisis in the area and they had requested a meeting with the association.

A meeting has been confirmed between councillors from the Glenties Municipal District and representatives of Clúid later this month.

Cllr Micheál Cholm MacGiolla Easbuig said as few as four or five people are occupying the apartments.

The Independent councillor said he has asked for the meeting to be held at the apartments in person and that has been agreed. He said the proposed demolition of the apartments was “scandalous”.

“This is ridiculous as we have homeless people in this area and this system of work has absolutely failed our community,” he said. “Senior staff in the council have been pushing this issue - all the councillors and the council are in one voice on this.”
