6 stylish serves to cheer Dry January

Abstaining for a month, zebra striping – alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – or simply taking a detour down sober street, Dry January doesn’t have to leave you feeling flat.

On the contrary, with the sober curious movement gathering momentum and the beginning of the year signalling a fresh start – think a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and focus on wellbeing – it’s a no-brainer to cut back on the booze.

Here’s how to get your non-alcoholic fix without compromising on ceremony or flavour…

1. Caleño Mid-Morning Mango Daquiri

Totally tropical… who wouldn’t want to rise and shine with this fruity infusion? Lots of fun, Caleño Mango & Passionfruit Tropical Alcohol-Free Rum, (£28.45, 50ml, Amazon), is a riot of exotic fruit flavours with hints of ripe mango, guava, passion fruit and touch of lime. Here’s the recipe which packs a punch…

Ingredients: 50ml Caleño Mango & Passion Fruit, 30ml mango (or tropical) juice, 30ml freshly squeezed lime juice, 10ml agave syrup, fresh mango wedge to garnish.

Method: Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add ingredients, shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a mango slice.

2. Belvoir Farm Strawberry & Chamomile Paloma

A fresh take on the classic Paloma, trade tequila for Belvoir Elderflower Cordial (£3.50, was £4.50, 500ml, Waitrose) and delight in the zippy taste sensation; a touch of chamomile tea complements the floral, honeyed flavours beautifully.

Ingredients: 60ml Belvoir Farm Elderflower Cordial, 80ml fresh grapefruit juice, 2-4 tbsp chamomile honey syrup, 4 sliced fresh strawberries, sparkling water to taste.

For the chamomile honey syrup: ¾ cup water, 1/3 cup honey, 1-2 chamomile tea bags.

To make the syrup, combine water and honey in a small saucepan and bring to a low boil, simmer for 1 minute and remove from the heat. Add the tea bag, cover and steep for 5-10 minutes. Remove the tea bag and allow the syrup to cool completely. Store in the fridge.

Method: Add the Belvoir Farm cordial, grapefruit juice, chamomile syrup and strawberries to a glass. Using a muddler, gently push the strawberries down until they release their juices and are lightly smashed.

Add a handful of ice and top with sparkling water. Stir gently, taste and add more chamomile syrup if desired. Garnish with fresh chamomile flowers and strawberries.

3. Pavari 17 Bitter Sweet

For a taste of the Med and a drop of winter sunshine in a glass, Pavari 17 Alcohol-Free Mediterranean Aperitivo (£19.99, 70cl, DioniLife) is a bitter-sweet aperitif infused with natural fruits and botanicals. Bright and refreshing, for this recipe they suggest pairing it with Equinox Organic Pink Grapefruit & Guava Kombucha (£2.40, 275ml, Waitrose) for a pleasant pick-me-up.

Ingredients: 35ml Pavari 17, 15ml grapefruit juice, 2 dashes lemon bitters, kombucha, soda water, grapefruit wedge to garnish.

Method: Half-fill a spritz glass with ice. Add the Pavari 17, grapefruit juice and lemon bitters. Top with half kombucha and half soda, stir slowly and garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

4. Cygnet Infinity Spritz

The simplest of serves but a symphony of flavours…. Welsh gin brand Cygnet – founded by world-famous classical singer Katherine Jenkins OBE – has entered the non-alcoholic arena with Cygnet Infinity (£32, 70cl, Marks & Spencer, in-store), their debut botanical spirit.

Said to carry “the same elegance, depth and authenticity as Cygnet 22” – a multi-award-winning, silky smooth gin – “but crafted with innovative botanicals,” such as lion’s mane, Siberian ginseng and schisandra; the botanical blend also has rosehip and hibiscus in the mix, helping to shape its plush pink hue.

Stylishly presented, it’s right on song with the surge in demand for luxe, non-alcoholic libations.

Ingredients: 60ml Cygnet Infinity, premium soda water, wedge of grapefruit and sprig of rosemary to garnish.

Method: Half-fill a high ball glass with ice, add the non-alcoholic botanical spirit, top with soda and garnish with a sprig of rosemary.

5. Wild Idol Kentish 75

A fun take on the French 75 cocktail (made with champagne), switch out the French fizz for Wild Idol Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Rose (£25.49 from £29.99, Wild Idol). Vibrant, fresh and aromatic, Kent’s award-winning Balfour Winery is behind this stellar non-alcoholic sparkler which graces wine lists at several Michelin-starred restaurants.

Ingredients: 100ml Wild Idol Rosé, 25ml Everleaf Forest Non-Alcoholic Aperitif, 15ml acacia honey syrup, 10ml lemon juice, lemon peel to garnish.

To make the syrup: Mix two parts acacia honey to one part warm water, stir until fully incorporated.

Method: Half-fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the Everleaf Forest, honey syrup and lemon juice. Shake vigorously and pour into a large wine glass filled with ice. Top with Wild Idol Rosé and garnish with a twist of lemon peel.

6. Lyre’s Espresso Martini

Cue coffee culture and comforting mocktails… the best way to get your caffeine kick this January is by layering up with Lyre’s – and a couple of its non-alcoholic options… Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic Coffee Originale (£23.99, 70cl, Lyre’s) and Lyre’s Non-Alcoholic White Cane Spirit (£23.99, 70cl, Lyre’s).

The latter imitates flavours of white rum, while the Originale “captures the essence of a rich coffee liqueur”. Here’s how to stir up coffee mornings…

Ingredients: 45ml Lyre’s Coffee Originale, 15ml Lyre’s White Cane Spirit, 45ml fresh espresso, 10ml vanilla syrup (not vanilla essence), coffee bean to garnish.

Method: Add the ingredients to a shaker and dry shake. Half-fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Fine strain into a chilled cocktail coupette and garnish with a coffee bean.
