Ruben Selles admits his future as Sheffield United boss is out of his hands as Blades fans called for the Spaniard to be sacked after just four league games in charge.
Selles’ nightmare start to life in charge of United continued as they went down 1-0 at table-topping Middlesbrough, leaving the Blades rock bottom and without a point going into the first international break.
The away fans at the Riverside turned on Selles and chanted the name of former boss Chris Wilder after Tommy Conway sealed a fourth straight win for Boro with a fine second-half strike.
Selles said: “Listen, I cannot control the situation. I will expect to go to my house tonight and then tomorrow go to work and then continue as normal. It’s not in my hands to make a decision.
“And until the very last moment, I will just do my best and try to do my things. When the situation is not in my control, I don’t think too much about what is going to happen in the future. Because realistically, I do as much as I can.
“At least if I go out, whether that’s tomorrow or if it’s in three years, I will always go out with the feeling that I made the decisions that I want to make. Obviously that includes my mistakes, but my decisions were honest and what I thought was the correct thing to do in every single moment.”
Selles, who previously managed Reading during the Royals’ off-the-field struggles and transfer embargoes, added: “I have been in worse situations and I end up just making the things happen and changing totally around the dynamics.
“So I don’t have a doubt about it. I’ve been in situations where I haven’t been paid on time, situations when they get points deductions, situations where we didn’t know if we would be able to train the next day at the training ground.
“And the reality is that we turned things around at the moment of connection. But you need to work hard to go to that moment and you need to go through a couple of critical moments on that journey.”
Rob Edwards has enjoyed a dream start to life at Middlesbrough and his side climbed top of the Championship thanks to Conway’s second goal of the season.
Boro have only conceded one goal in their opening four games and Edwards and his players celebrated with the fans at full-time.
The former Luton boss handed new signings Matt Targett and Kaly Sene debuts from the bench and is hoping Boro keep hold of star midfielder Hayden Hackney ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.
He said: “I’m really pleased. I thought overall it was a really good and accomplished performance.
“We deserved to win and I’m really pleased we got it, even if I’d like it to have been a bit more comfortable.
“There’s a good feeling around the place and that’s great and long may that continue. I want the fans to be able to enjoy watching their team and enjoy those moments and celebrate.
“It’s our job to try and provide those good moments and build that connection, but also to make sure we get level ahead of the next game.”
