Double delight as Cahir Gormley, Ciara Craig win National Intermediate titles

Cahir Gormley and Ciara Craig were crowned National Intermediate champions on Saturday.

Illies Golden Gloves light-middle Gormely and lightweight Craig, a native of Falcarragh boxing out of Glengormley, triumphed at the National Stadium.

Gormley overcame Brian Morgan in the 71kgs final. The Illies puncher claimed a 3-2 split decision win against the Belfast Kronk representative.

Gormley had to navigate a tricky series of bouts on route to the final.

On the opening weekend, Gormley defeated Daniel Magliozzi from Golden Cobra on a unanimous decision.

In his quarter-final, Gormley stopped Lee Hanna from Townland in the opening round.

In Friday night’s semi, Gormley saw off Sean Larkin, taking a unanimous decision against the Dublin Docklands boxer.

Gormley and Morgan were involved in a testing final and it was the Illies man whose hand was raised. A previous Cadet champion when with the Maydown club in Derry, Gormley edged the final.

Craig, a former Dunfanaghy Boxing Club boxer, earned a split decision, on a 4-1 count, against Catrina Moore from Emerald.

Craig landed the 60kgs crown having defeated Celtic Eagles’ Keelyn Mangan in her semi-final on Friday night.
