Vicar Street, Kilkenny
Improvement works at Vicar Street are due to get under way in September and will take approximately six months to complete.
The works shall comprise of reducing the road width to suit one-way traffic while widening the footways on either side and the addition of contraflow cycle lane. The existing mini-roundabout will also be removed and replaced with a T-junction.
Upgrading works will take place on the road surface and footways and there will be realignment of road gullies to suit the proposed carriage way width.
The purpose of the works is to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and to improve current traffic movements for locals and visitors to the city.
The aims of the project are improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists and improved traffic by changing from a two-way carriage way to a one-way southbound route.
City engineer, Ian Gardner told The Kilkenny People that work on the one-way system in Vicar Street will start later this year.
“I would expect the works on Vicar Street to commence later this year, around September and take approximately six months to complete,” he said .
Following the completion of the works Vicar Street will be made one-way inbound for vehicular traffic towards St Canice’s Place. Contraflow cycling will be permitted so the street will remain two-way for cyclists.
Meanwhile the Ormonde Street Improvement Works are ongoing and are expected to be completed in 12 to 14 weeks.
