Works on one-way system on Vicar Street in Kilkenny to start shortly

Vicar Street, Kilkenny

Works on a one-way system for Vicar Street are expected to start by April and will take up to six months to complete.

The planned works will be primarily carried out by Kilkenny County Council and an exact start date is expected to be announced over the coming weeks.

Senior engineer with Kilkenny County Council, Ian Gardner said that ‘the works will be undertaken primarily using in-house resources as opposed to appointing a main contractor’.

“We are therefore not yet in a position as yet to give an exact start date as we are awaiting annual funding announcements before finalising our complete programme of works across the whole area for this year.”

The works are being carried out to improve cyclist and pedestrian facilities. The proposed one-way system will allow the carriageway width to be reduced and the ‘spare’ width will be allocated to pedestrians and cyclists.

The direction of the traffic will be inbound.

One of the advantages of the planned works is that much of the traffic currently travelling outbound along Vicar Street is heading for the Castlecomer Road so this can be achieved instead by travelling over St. Francis Bridge and along Old Mart Street instead of using Vicar Street, Green Street, Greens Bridge and New Road.

As part of the planned works cyclists travelling in the same direction as vehicular traffic will share the road with vehicles and a segregated cycleway will be provided for the direction opposite to vehicular flow. Footways are also to be provided on both sides of Vicar Street under the redesign.

Vicar Street will be closed daily during the works between peak hours (9.00am to 4.30pm.

“The intention would be that the street would be open in the evenings and weekends but only in the inbound direction as per the permanent proposal. It may be necessary on occasion to close the street outside of the proposed hours but this will be advertised at the time,” added Mr Gardner.
