Funding announced for the improvement of public transport in Kilkenny

The National Transport Authority (NTA) has announced an investment of €3.5 million for Kilkenny County Council to improve walking, cycling, and public transport infrastructure locally in 2024.

The allocated funds will support 26 projects in Co Kilkenny, with a focus on improving connectivity, safety, and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users.

One of the key initiatives announced is the Coote's Lane to Ring Road 'Active Travel Scheme' in Kilkenny City, which has received just over half a million euros. This project includes the construction of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Breagagh, linking Coote's Lane to the Ring Road. The scheme aims to create a safer and more attractive route for both school children and the wider community, with opportunities for art installations and biodiversity planting along the lane.

Meanwhile, a portion of the funding, amounting to €600,000, has been earmarked for enhancing pedestrian and cyclist safety on the Freshford Rd and Granges Rd, with a particular focus on Loreto Secondary School and St. Canice's Primary School. An additional €100,000 investment will benefit school children in Graignamanagh, providing safer routes to school across the three schools in the area.

Other allocations include €300,000 for the completion of improvements to Bridge St., Callan, and €200,000 for the enhancement of pedestrian and cyclist facilities in the Castlecomer and Piltown municipal areas. These investments align with the mobility management plans completed in towns in these electoral areas.

Funds will also be directed towards public lighting schemes and the improvement of pedestrian and cyclist facilities from Roberts Hill to the city centre, extending the benefits of active travel to the west of the City and in Loughboy Park.

The announcement also includes funding to progress several schemes in Kilkenny City through the next stages of feasibility and design. This involves developing pedestrian and cyclist facilities on the Waterford Road, Bohernatounish Road, and Hebron Rd. Options will also be explored at Greensbridge and for a tie-in from the Ossory Foot Bridge to the Ring Road, with the expectation that these projects will enter the planning phase in 2025, followed by construction upon completion of the planning processes.

Also included are designs for safer crossings on the Ring Road in Kilkenny City, a joint project involving Kilkenny County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and the National Transport Authority. This ambitious project aims to incorporate safe crossings at 10 junctions, prioritising the safety of all road users.
