Kilkenny councillor reflects on the tenure of 'inspirational' outgoing Green Party leader Eamon Ryan

Kilkenny City Green Party councillor, Maria Dollard has told the Kilkenny People she was saddened to hear of the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Transport, Eamon Ryan’s departure, describing him as a 'skilled negotiator'.

Earlier this week, local TD Malcolm Noonan ruled himself out of the running to replace the Green Party leader and endorsed Roderic O'Gorman, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.

"Eamon has been an inspirational leader in the manner with which he carried out his duties, demonstrated passion for climate action and his conviction that Ireland can transform from Climate laggards to leaders," Cllr Dollard said.

"He is a skilled negotiator and persuader as he demonstrated both domestically and abroad. In the sometimes-cynical world of politics, he showed sincere, serious-minded politics is not just possible but can be extremely effective," she added.

A reduction in childcare costs, the expansion of parental leave and creating new bus services were amongst Mr Ryan's achievements with his resilience standing out to the Kilkenny councillor.

"He is a man of passion and conviction that inspires and convinces people of the need for climate action. I believe because he speaks so convincingly, he has also endured appalling personal abuse. He rose above the base level of the abuse he endured and did his job professionally with dignity and sincerity but I was always conscious, he was also a Dad and family carer.

"I am glad he will have more time now with his family and they with him. He has led the Greens in government to achieve a long list of positive advancements for Irish people and for that he can be proud." she said.

"I wish him, Victoria and Tommy the very best in his retirement from politics. He has left a legacy that will endure for many years to come," Cllr Dollard concluded.
