Murdered: Marie Tierney
The family of murdered Marie Tierney, who was reported missing 40 years ago this week, are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
“As a family we are making a heartfelt plea for information, someone knows what happened to Marie and we are appealing to them to do the right thing and come forward so Marie can finally have justice and rest in peace,” Marie’s sister, Breeda Fay said.
“Myself and my brother, John along with the rest of the family are appealing to anyone who knows anything that might help gardaí with their investigations to come forward.
“Until somebody is brought to justice as a family we cannot rest and Marie cannot rest in peace. Marie was such a lovely, gentle woman, we want her murderer brought to justice,” she added.
Missing
Marie Tierney was reported missing by her husband Jim Tierney on October 22, 1984. He told gardaí that she left her home at Clinstown, Jenkinstown at approximately 10.30pm on October 21, 1984 in the family car, a Renault 18. The car was located at Newpark Fen the following day.
On December 21, 1984 her body was located in a ditch by a male out walking on the Bleach Road on the outskirts of Kilkenny City. She had been violently strangled.
As part of a cold case investigation the remains of the murdered mother-of-two were exhumed in October 2018 and a postmortem took place and a file on the case was submitted to the DPP.
Superintendent at Kilkenny Garda Station, Seán O’Meara said that the ‘thoughts of An Garda Síochana are with the Tierney and Burke families on the 40th annivesary of Marie being reported missing.
The senior garda said that the investigation is ongoing and made an appeal for information.
“We continue to seek the public’s assistance in this case.
“We submitted a file to the DPP previously on the matter but there remains no resolution for Marie’s family.
“We believe that there are people who may have information that could advance the case and would ask them to come forward with it even now. It is never too late and any information could greatly assist a family still seeking answers after all this time.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact gardaí in Kilkenny on (056) 777 5000 or on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
