In Kilkenny, the essence of community shines brightest when we come together to support those in need.

Individuals and families unite to lift one another during challenging times. This week, we turn our attention to local hero David Carter, who is gearing up for the Ultra 300 Challenge. Over the course of this event, David will cover six marathons, six counties in six days — all in the name of raising vital funds for three deserving organisations.

Similarly, the Kiely family exemplifies this spirit, dedicating a decade to raising funds for SERT, an organisation that provides free transport for cancer patients in the South East.

Of course, it’s essential to recognise that behind every successful fundraiser lies the unwavering support of other people. As we have seen recently, generosity flows freely in Kilkenny.

Recent events highlight the collective compassion of our community. Just last week, we reported on the incredible response to a family who suffered a devastating house fire, with €34,207 raised in a matter of days.

Similarly, the Prendergast family faced unimaginable loss when a fire ravaged their farm, destroying two family businesses. Within a week, almost €70,000 was raised to support them. These stories remind us that communities are strongest when they stand together.

MARIE TIERNEY
On the 40th anniversary of her murder, the family of Marie Tierney are again appealing for anyone with any information to come forward. The mother-of-two was reported missing by her husband Jim Tierney on October 22, 1984.

As part of the cold case investigation, remains were exhumed several years ago, and a postmortem took place. New witnesses were also interviewed. Anyone who knows anything about the matter should contact gardaí and share their information. Marie and her family deserve the closure and peace that it could bring.
