Pavement surfacing works on a stretch of the greenway in South Kilkenny
Work is currently underway to advance plans for the southern connectivity link between Slieverue and Kilmurry Lane, as part of the South-East Greenway project.
A meeting hosted in Slieverue’s parish hall between local authority representatives and community members yielded 19 submissions on proposed plans which sought modifications to the development of the southern connectivity link of the South-East Greenway.
Frank Stafford, Kilkenny County Council’s Senior Engineer for the Environment, Climate Action and Parks Section, proposed that the speed limit along the greenway be reduced from 50km/h to 30km/h.
A significant number of residents along the Kilmurry Lane expressed concern about the noise and light pollution arising from the roadworks, it was noted. Mr Stafford suggested that the number of lights be reduced from 48 to 11, and that they be placed at speed ramps and intersections. He then put forward that road cushions be put in place rather than ramps to reduce both speed and noise pollution.
Councillor Ger Frisby, Chairman of Piltown Municipal District, welcomed the tweaks and proposed that the project proceed to the next phase of the planning process. “This project will breathe life back into the village of Slieverue,” he said. He commended Frank and his team for a job well done on public engagement and for dealing with submissions.
Councillor Tomas Breathnach seconded the motion, saying that the Greenway will be a great addition to local tourist offerings.
