Kilkenny pharmacies are leading they way when it comes to promoting awareness around domestic violence.

Pharmacies around the city and county have signed up to the Safe Pharmacy initiative which is being led by the Irish Pharmacy Union in partnership with Safe Ireland, An Garda Síochána and the HSE.

The Safe Pharmacy initiative is a new initiative to enable people experiencing domestic abuse and coercive control to receive support in their local pharmacy. Participating pharmacies have the purple ‘Safe Pharmacy’ logo on display near the door and they will have specially trained staff who can help.

The pharmacy will provide access to a phone in a private consultation room, where a victim can contact a local support service or ring An Garda Síochána for emergency support.

Local participating pharmacies include: O’Connell's Haven Pharmacies on High Street and RoseInn Street; Boots on High Street and McDonagh Junction; Carroll's Pharmacy ,Freshford; Costello's Pharmacy, Callan; Freshco Pharmacy, Dublin Road; Keane's Pharmacy, John Street; Madigan's Pharmacy, Old Callan Road; Sheehy's Life Pharmacy in Newpark Shopping Centre; MacCauley's in Loughboy and High Street and McDowell's Pharmacy in Callan.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on November 25 and runs until 10 December. During this campaign it is important to raise awareness and call for changes at an international, national and local level to end violence against women and girls.

Over the last number of weeks, Inspector Alma Molloy and Garda Kerry McLeish of Kilkenny Garda Station and members from the Kilkenny Domestic Abuse Action Network and the Amber Refuge have been engaging with all the participating pharmacies in the Kilkenny District to meet with the Safe Pharmacy Champions and to offer their support and help with the new initiative.

Anyone who is experiencing a domestic abuse situation and wishes to seek the support provided is
advised to look for the purple safe pharmacy sign in the windows of the named pharmacies or contact the gardai directly by dialling 112 or 999.
