A book of evidence was served on a man who is accused of opening post and stealing items from Portlaoise Mail Centre.

Oluwaseyi Ogundre, 22, with an address at Clonroosk Abbey, Portlaoise, is charged with theft and interfering with mail at An Post Mail Centre, Father Brown Avenue, Portlaoise between September 7, 2021 and September 12, 2022.

In total there are 115 charges in the book of evidence. The charges relate to items including St Vincent de Paul vouchers,  iphones, cash in euro and sterling, one for all vouchers, debit cards and gift cards.

Garda Sergeant Michael Tarpey said he served the book of evidence on the accused at Portlaosie District Court.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the DPP consents to the defendant being sent forward for trial to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court on October 24.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald requested legal aid for two barristers for the defence due to the volume of charges in the book of evidence.

“It is allegedly a large amount of post. Removing cash and vouchers,” said Sgt Kirby.

Judge Andrew Cody assigned legal aid for a solicitor and two barristers and sent the case forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court on October 24.
