A wealth of historical Laois items including maps, documents, film footage, newspapers and books has all been gathered in one room at the new Portlaoise library for the public to study.

An ideal chance to explore the new library and its dedicated Local Studies section of the library comes along this Wednesday evening, October 25.

Laois Heritage Society is holding a talk all about the collection, given by the Laois Local Studies Librarian Sinéad Holland who is also chairperson of the society.

The public is welcome to come along, with membership taken on the night to join the society.

'Laois Local Studies: A Unique Resource for Research, Reminiscence and Recreation' will be given by the Ms Holland this Wednesday, October 25 at 8pm in Portlaoise Library, Main St, Portlaoise.

Her talk will explore the development of the Laois Local Studies collection and service since its foundation and the role it plays in fostering education and research.

The night will also touch on the importance of Local Studies as a resource for recreation and pleasure and as a means of creating community cohesion and a sense of place for all.

Portlaoise Library is also the Laois County Library. Local Studies is a section dedicated to acquiring, preserving, and making available to the public, for research and pleasure, material relating to the history and heritage of Laois.

The collection has books, newspapers, journals, maps, photographs, oral histories, music and film recordings, reflecting the heritage of Laois from Fionn McCumhaill to the County Final.
