Seven car accidents occurred in Laois on Sunday November 10, prompting concerns over road safety awareness.

With the weather breaking after a dry spell, Laois roads are particularly greasy, leading to several incidents of rear ending.

At 11pm on R419 in Ballymorris, a car lost control and crashed into a ditch. No injuries were reported.

At 12pm on Main Street Portarlington, two vehicles collided. One driver was brought to hospital as a precaution, with no serious injuries reported.

At 12.10pm on French Church Street in Portarlington, two vehicles collided, causing material damage only.

At 12.30pm on the Mountrath road in Portlaoise, a car was rear ended. The incident involved two vehicles with material damage only.

At 3pm on the Mountmellick road, an accident took place involving two cars. There were no injuries reported, with material damage to the cars.

At 7pm on Ridge Road in Esker Hills, Portlaoise, a car was rear ended. No injuries were reported, with material damage only to the cars.

At 21.30pm Simmons Mill Cross Ballylehane, Lower Ballylinan, a driver skidded and hit the road barrier. It was a single vehicle collision with no injuries reported.

When surfaces are slippery or greasy, avoid harsh braking or harsh acceleration. Much like driving on icy conditions, it is recommended you undertake gentle manoeuvres.

If you do find yourself in a skid, gradually reduce acceleration rather than hitting the brakes, and turn your wheel in the direction of the skid. Driving fast through surface water is dangerous as it puts drivers at risk of aquaplaning.
