Council agrees to put de-icing salt bins outside Laois primary school

'Steep incline' on town road to school and housing estate

Council agrees to put de-icing salt bins outside Laois primary school

A road to a Laois primary school with a steep hill on it is to have two salt bins installed and kept full by Laois County Council.

Portlaoise Municipal District councillor John Joe Fennelly got approval for the bins, to be placed at two locations in Abbeyleix on the Ballyroan Road, near Scoil Mhuire National School, and the Fairways housing estate.

He had tabled a motion with the request to the March district meeting.

"These are two areas that are causing great concerns. There is a sharp incline there. I look forward to these being put in situ," Cllr Fennelly said.

In reply to his motion, area engineer Wes Wilkinson said that the Portlaoise MD office proposes to install the bins at two locations, due to the steep hill on the entrance roads to Fairways Estate and in the vicinity of Scoil Mhuire on the Abbeyleix Road.

The R425 Ballyroan Road in Abbeyleix is included on the route map covered by Laois County Council's de-icing vehicles (see red route above). However the vehicles do not cover minor roads or housing estates. Read more about the winter treatment of Laois roads here.
