New social housing in Laois.
Older Laois homeowners wanting to downsize, should get cash as well as a smaller home from Laois County Council, says Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley.
“We don't have a policy in place for people wanting to rightsize. I've dealth with couples in houses that are too big and not suitable, but there's a gap between what they get to sell, and the cost of a new house,” she said.
Cllr Stanley from the Portlaoise Municipal District says Laois should follow and improve on a similar property policy practiced in Dublin South Central.
“There if you sell a house for €400,000, you give 50% of the money to the local authority, and they provide you with a smaller house.
“I wouldn't be singing from that hymnsheet. My concern is we're losing an opportunity of purchasing the house. So that we're getting a house for a house. It's a missed opportunity by the council.
“These people are not going to get a mortgage in their 70s or go and privately rent.
“At least Dublin south central have a policy.
“This is not just about getting extra council properties, it's about helping people. There isn't any other opportunity available for them. We all know someone who's turned their sitting room into a bedroom. The option to give a grant to add a downstairs bedroom and wetroom is only making their house even larger,” Cllr Dwane Stanley said.
Her motion asking for the policy was tabled to the October council meeting.
Cllr Aisling Moran seconded it.
“I'm surprised with Donal's answer. We've raised this at SPCs before. As we age, our hips and knees stop working properly. Even a house swap (might work). I think retirement villages should be in every village.

The Director for Housing Donal Brennan in reply to a motion by Cllr Dwane Stanley, said that the suggestion will be referred to the Housing Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) for consideration.
Cllr Ben Brennan suggests that every new private estate should include some small bungalows so people can downsize in their own area.
