Non aggressive pacu fish found washed up by anglers

South American fish related to piranha found in Garadice Lake

The 2 kilo pacu fish found washed up at Garadice Lake in Leitrim.

The sixth round of the Cavan Angling Club winter league took place on Sunday the 18th of February, what the anglers attending did not expect to see washed up on Haughtons Shore, Garadice Lough was a dead pacu.

An omnivorous South American freshwater serrasalmid fish related to piranhas. The teeth on this particular species are more human like, whereas the piranha has very pointed teeth.

This dead specimen was over two kilos in weight and has been given to the Inland Fisheries for analysis.

The anglers suspect that the fish was probably kept in an aquarium, but having grown so large, may have been released into the
lake by the owner.

Normally found in tropical or sub-tropical climates they speculate that it could not tolerate the cold winter months and so perished.
