Funding of €745,600 for Leitrim under Town and Village Funding Scheme

€495,600 for Carrick-on-Shannon to develop a community/youth arts facility Manorhamilton to receive €250,000 to refurbish a vacant property into youth hub

Tis the season for giving

€745,600 to benefit Carrick-on-Shannon and Manorhamilton.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today announced over €745,600 to benefit 2 towns in Co Leitrim.

The funding is being provided under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme as part of Our Rural Future and places a strong emphasis on projects which tackle vacancy and dereliction by bringing landmark town centre buildings back to life.

Deputy Frank Feighan has expressed his delight at the funding his constituency has received, the projects receiving funding include,

“I am thrilled to see over €495,600 for Carrick-on-Shannon to develop a community/youth arts facility serving communities of all ages and bringing back into use, a town centre abuilding at risk of dereliction.

“Manorhamilton is set to receive €250,000 to refurbishment of a vacant property in the centre of a town into a fully accessible dedicated youth hub," he said.

Fine Gael candidate for Carrick-on-Shannon, Maeve Reynolds, commented: “I was delighted to receive confirmation that over €495,000 has been announced to develop a community youth arts facility in Carrick-on-Shannon.  The need for a community space, especially for younger people has been raised with me on a number of occasions during my canvassing in the Carrick-on-Shannon area."

Maeve added: “One of the most pressing issues I’ve come across is the absence of a safe space for teenagers to gather and for community activities to take place.  There is significant demand for such a space to build community unity and offer avenues for social interaction.

"A safe space for teenagers is badly needed in the town, and while there are fantastic clubs and organisations in the town, sometimes people who don’t fit this profile can feel excluded.  I am hoping this facility will go a great distance in bridging this gap.”

Maeve Reynolds concluded: “I have been lobbying extensively for additional funding and have been working with Deputy Frank Feighan who progressed the matter with Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD.  This significant investment of almost half a million euro is very much welcomed.  I look forward to work commencing as soon as possible.”

Cllr Finola Armstrong-McGuire said she was also delighted to see this morning's announcement of funding to Leitrim County Council to bring a vacant building back into use as a community / youths art facility serving communities of all ages in Carrick-on-Shannon.
"The call has been made by members of many groups to have a specific and purpose built meeting space convenient to all with additional uses being encouraged so that it is a busy and vibrant space.
"The refurbishment and updating of this premises will be a welcoming space in our town centre.
"I would like to thank those who wrote the successful application on behalf of the community and LCC.  Minister Humphries and her department have a vision to put life back into our town centres and this can only be done with a large percentage of funding from Government departments," she said.
