Parking fines in Leitrim increased by 13 in 2023 compared to the year previous in 2022.
14 fines were handed out last year, with just one in 2022. The only town in Leitrim where paid parking is in Carrick-on-Shannon, which contributes to the low number of fines.
Paid parking was reintroduced in Carrick-on-Shannon in October of 2022 after bye-laws were passed by the Council. Paid parking is on all on-street areas. Free parking has remained at the fire station, the Quay and town centre car park.
Nationwide, the number of fines issued to motorists rose by over 15 percent, with more than 351,000 tickets issued in 2023, compared to over 304,000 in 2022.
The fines for motorists range from €40 to €150. Failing to display a parking ticket costs €40, non-display of a valid tax disc is €60, parking on footpaths and bus/cycle lanes attracts €80 and illegally parking in a designated space for disabled costs €150.
Across the 31 local authorities in Ireland, they are likely to have received at least €14 million in parking fines last year.
Leitrim’s neighbouring counties varied on their parking fines. Sligo’s parking fines decreased by approximately 29.5% on the previous year, and Cavan saw a decrease of approximately 43.5%. County Donegal saw a dramatic increase of 5,126 fines in the previous year and Longford saw an increase of 13.
Roscommon has no paid parking or traffic wardens in the county.
