Stricter action on dog fouling urged in Leitrim

A call for greater efforts to tackle dog fouling was raised at December’s meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District.

Cllr Brendan Barry asked that the district do more to tackle the issue and noted while many dog owners behave in an ‘acceptable manner,’ many others do not.

“All dog walkers should carry “Poop Scoops” and dispose of this litter appropriately from walkways. It needs to be sociably unacceptable for people to leave this litter on the footpaths of our towns and villages,” Cllr Barry said.

A report from the Economic Development highlighted the work already being carried out by the Leitrim Dog Warden Service to address dog fouling throughout the county.

24 dog waste bins and 28 dog waste bag dispensers are located throughout County Leitrim.

Leitrim property to be converted into four social housing units

A vacant property has been bought on Ballinamore’s Main Street and the housing section are working to convert the it into four social housing units.

There have been 36,200 free dog waste bags dispensed between January and November of this year, 611 visits to service waste bins and nine new dog fouling signs erected to encourage responsible pet ownership.

The Leitrim Dog Warden Service also carries out school visits, newspaper articles and radio interviews to encourage a culture of ‘Scoop the Poop.’

In Ballinamore Municipal District, there are seven designated dog waste bins.

Ballinamore has two, one on the Canal Walk and one on the Greenway.

Drumshanbo has four located on Johnny Wynne’s Bay, the outdoor exercise area, the Carrick road and Acres Lake and the final dog waste bin in the district is located in Carrigallen on the Mohill road.
