Renewed call for traffic review outside Leitrim primary school

Cllr Eddie Mitchell has once again called for a review of traffic restrictions outside Drumlease National School in Dromahair, despite previous improvement works been completed.

He proposed a similar motion at November’s meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District.

“There’s a lot of fast traffic and I can see a lot of work has been done. The response says its driver behaviour that’s the problem but our role is to try put in physical solutions to try influence behaviour,” Cllr Mitchell said.

A response from the Roads department stated that all possible engineering design interventions have been implemented, and the remaining issue lies with driver behaviour, which is a matter of enforcement.

“A huge amount of improvements were carried out, but it’s very hard when people choose to speed. I think it’s more coming in from the Manorhamilton side that people tend to speed,” Cllr Bohan commented.

Cllr Gilmartin noted that some drivers are using a side road to enter Dromahair more quickly and can approach the village at a high speed.

Drumlease NS received funding in 2023 for works to be carried out under the Safe Route to School Programme, which facilitated works such as a ramped pedestrian crossing, high-friction surfacing and driver feedback signs.

Additionally, Active Travel is funding the construction of a footpath from the Churchfield housing estate to the school, narrowing the carriageway which should reduce traffic speeds further.
