RIP: Warm tributes paid to Leitrim man remembered as ‘a perfect gentleman’

Tributes have been paid to a Leitrim man described as “a perfect gentleman” following his passing. 

Leo Stanford of St Patrick’s Park, Carrick-on-Shannon passed away suddenly, surrounded by his loving family at Drumderrig Nursing Home, Boyle on Thursday, April 2.

Leo was predeceased by his parents Gretta and Joe, his sister Chrissie and his brother PJ. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, sisters Anna (England) and Eileen (Wicklow), brother-in-law Frank, sister-in-law Cora, nephews Peter, John, Philip, Francis, John and Mark, nieces Mandy, Tracey, Karen, Caroline, Amanda, Lorna and Bernie, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Condolences have been shared on RIP.ie following Leo’s passing. A former staff member of the Leitrim Observer, several tributes remembered him fondly for his time working at the paper.

“A quiet but firm friend from our time at the Observer, Leo was the essence of a gentleman and will be sorely missed,” one tribute read.

“I worked with Leo all my life in the Leitrim Observer and he was one of nature's gentlemen. A quiet and unassuming man, may his gentle soul Rest in Peace,” said another.

“I had the pleasure of working with Leo for many years in the Leitrim Observer, lots of great memories of a pure gentleman,” read another.

Other tributes reflected on Leo’s knowledge and character.

“Leo was a quiet spoken man with a great knowledge of old Carrick-on-Shannon that he was very proud of,” one read.

“Leo was such a quiet man and perfect gentleman. Always had time for a chat,” said another.

Mass of Christian burial for Leo took place on Monday, April 6 in St Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon, followed by burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.

Another condolence said, “Such a gentle soul, kind and generous. Carrick won’t feel the same without you.”

“He was indeed a gentleman that went about his business without any fuss,” said another.
