WATCH: Gardai investigate another arson incident at Limerick GAA grounds

Kilmallock GAA Club shared a photo of the damage on their Facebook page

KILMALLOCK GAA Club volunteers are facing a another clean-up after vandals broke in and lit a fire on their grounds.

A post on their Facebook page this Sunday, accompanying a photo and video, reads: "This how our grounds looked this morning. Two sections of the fencing are destroyed, the field is damaged, and the seating in the stand is gone - burnt away."

Gardaí confirmed to Limerick Live they are investigating an incident of criminal damage at a sports ground in Kilmallock, which is "understood to have occurred in the early hours of this morning, Sunday, May 21".

"Fire damage was caused to the stand. Investigations are ongoing," said the garda spokesperson.

This isn't the first time Kilmallock GAA grounds have been targeted. In July 2021, a number of juveniles took a dustbin from the stand and lit a fire in it, damaging the surface of the pitch. There have also been other incidents of vandalism.

Cllr PJ Carey said it is "terrible for all involved and particularly sad for the committee, coaching staff and all of the volunteers that give time to this great organisation". He said the soccer and athletics clubs have also been targeted.

Cllr Carey said that in recent weeks beautifully planted flower pots by Kilmallock Tidy Towns were knocked over.

"It is very annoying and demoralising for volunteers," said Cllr Carey.
