THE VILLAGE of Patrickswell was made history on Saturday as the first event was held in their new €1.5m community centre.
Patrickswell Community Council hosted a coffee morning - the first of many.
The community council secured significant grant funding from a number of sources to deliver this much-needed facility including €250,000 from the JP McManus Benevolent Fund, €500,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development, €500,000 from Limerick City and County Council and the remainder of the funding from locals, for which the committee are very grateful.
Contractors moved in on site in August 2022 to commence construction after years of hard work by many volunteers. Parkway Construction completed the build, which took just over a year. The design team were led by architect Rob Shanahan, quantity surveyor Cathal Keane, of Cuddy QS and David O’Malley, of Hutch O’Malley Consulting Engineers.
Vice chairperson of Patrickswell Community Council Mike Ahern said it was truly an historic day for the village and all who live within it.
"Over many years our volunteers have worked tirelessly to deliver a community centre for the 'Well.
"We would like to sincerely thank our local councillor Dan McSweeney for his vision and tireless work in helping to bring this project to a conclusion and Minister Patrick O’Donovan for representing us at Government level and ensuring we received the necessary funding to make our dream become a reality," said Mr Ahern.
Deputy Mayor Dan McSweeney said pver the last four years he has had the privilege of working alongside a truly amazing group of volunteers who never gave up on their dream of delivering a state of the art community centre for Patrickswell.
“As we have seen in recent days the centre will become the focal point of our village. I look forward to continuing to work with Patrickswell Community Council and to deliver for Patrickswell," said Cllr McSweeney.
