The newly-renovated Market House was launched at a community event in Newcastle West
THE RENOVATED Market House in Newcastle West has been officially opened.
Through West Limerick Resources (WLR) and the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP), it will offer a range of supports and services.
There was a vision of providing a community facility that would be accessible to all, in the renovation project.
Funding was secured through the Community Centres Investment Fund (CCIF) and with support from Limerick City and County Council and SICAP.
On the day of the opening, Chair of WLR, Sean Liston spoke of how the market house was originally set up in 1873 and how it was known locally as The Weigh House.

Over the years, the building has been WLR’s first office space, a tourist information office, a community craft space, offices for the Rural Social Scheme, a community radio station and most recently a pop-up shop.
SICAP coordinator, Dearbhla Conlon Ahern said: “The Market House has been an integral part of our community’s history, evolving alongside our changing needs and aspirations.
“Today marks a new chapter in its legacy, one that remains deeply rooted in our commitment to serving the needs of our community.”
All information on any upcoming free community events at the Market House can be found on the West Limerick Resources Facebook page.
