Cllr Elisa O'Donovan seeks answers on relocation of ambulance base from University Hospital Limerick to Rosbrien at Regional Health Forum
A NEW ambulance base is being built in Limerick, with construction already underway and completion expected by the end of 2026.
The update was provided at the Regional Health Forum (RHF) meeting on May 27, where Cllr Elisa O’Donovan asked for clarity on the location of the new base and the long-term plans for the current ambulance facility across from University Hospital Limerick (UHL).
The RHF serves as a platform for elected representatives to make representations to the HSE on the range and operation of health services in their areas.
In response, the NAS said the new Mid-West Regional Ambulance base is located just off the Rosbrien entrance to the Limerick Southern Ring Road at the end of the R526.

Joe Hoare, assistant national director, capital and estates Mid-West said: “Construction works commenced on site at the start of February 2025 and works are currently ongoing. It is intended that the building will be ready of occupancy by the National Ambulance Service before the end of Q4 2026.
“The specific long-term plans for the current ambulance base site are not yet confirmed. The intention is that the site will be used to support the operations of the UHL campus across the road from the site.
“The HSE has noted the concerns of local residents regarding the impact of any new build on the ambulance site and would advise that there are no immediate plans for additional builds on that site.”
However, the response did not explain why the existing UHL ambulance base needs to relocate, nor did it provide a clear outline of the long-term use of the current site.
In response to a query to the Limerick Leader, a spokesperson for NAS added: “A major capital project is now underway with the commencement of the new Mid-West Ambulance Headquarters at Rosbrien, Co. Limerick.
“This will provide a state-of-the-art hub to support command, training, and coordination to enhance service delivery for the people of the region.”
