Cllr Dan McSweeney on the site of the proposed sports complex
LIMERICK council is looking for a design team for its proposed new community and sports complex in Patrickswell.
The local authority has issued a call-out for professionals to design the plan for the development, which is earmarked for lands adjoining Lisheen Park and Faha View in the village.
The project’s progression comes after the Patrickswell Local Area Plan was adopted by full council in February of last year.
This blueprint identified the land as what is known as a “key opportunity site” to deliver amenity and recreational facilities to support both the community and sports clubs.

It’s anticipated a design team will be appointed next month.
Then, either this year or early next year, a formal planning application will be lodged.
As the development is taking place on public land, it will be the role of council members to decide whether to reject the proposal or accept it.
As part of the development, it’s expected there will be two playing pitches - one for soccer, one for GAA - a natural play area, tennis court, basketball court, other exercise equipment, a games area and a community walkway.
Patrickswell-based Fine Gael councillor Dan McSweeney has said the seeking of a design team for this project is a big step forward.
“This is a hugely positive move forward for Patrickswell and reflects the hard work carried out by Limerick City and County Council and local stakeholders. The proposed community and sports complex will be another transformational project for our village — providing much-needed facilities for all within our community,” he added.
Cllr McSweeney says it’s vital the plan is executed as quickly as possible.
“At present, we have no dedicated play facilities for young children within our community with many families having to travel to Mungret, Adare and Croom for such facilities,” he pointed out.
“As Patrickswell continues to grow, it’s essential that Limerick City and County Council continue to invest in quality amenities that support a thriving community. I look forward to seeing this project progress through the design and planning stages in the coming months,” Cllr McSweeney, who was priomh-comhairleoir last year, concluded.
Elsewhere in Patrickswell, the local authority is seeking a construction team for a new housing development.
This is for 24 homes at Barnakyle in the village, alongside all site development and local upgrade works.
