A MAJOR emergency response is taking place in the Shannon Estuary this Sunday.

There are reports that a person fell overboard from a ferry linking Tarbert in County Kerry and Killimer in County Clare this morning.

The age or sex of the person is not known at this time.

The Flight Radar 24 website showed an Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Waterford (IRCG117) flying in a circular pattern above the estuary.

The Irish Coast Guard is being assisted in the search and rescue operation by several units of lifeboats, local yachts and Ballybunion Sea and Cliff Rescue Team, according to RTÉ.

Shannon Ferries, who run the ferry service, Irish Coast Guard and An Garda Siochana have all been contacted for comment.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are assisting emergency services at the scene of an incident near Tarbert, Co. Kerry this morning, Sunday, September 7. No further information is available at this time."
