Mullahoran fondly remembers excellent carpenter and staunch footballer Connie Fitzsimons

The Late Connie Fitzsimons, Lorcan Avenue, Santry, Dublin / Loughduff, Cavan

The funeral took place on Tuesday, August 8 of Connie Fitzsimons, Lorcan Avenue, Santry, Dublin and late Killadream, Loughduff following requiem mass in St Joseph’s church, Loughduff to local cemetery.

Connie passed away on Saturday, August 5 in the dedicated care of staff and volunteers at St Francis Hospice, Raheny following a long illness.

After he left Loughduff school Connie attended the Technical school in Kilnaleck where he learned carpentry - a trade at which he excelled.

Having spent some years on the buildings in Dublin he later progressed to Dublin Corporation where he remained until he retired.

The story goes that when he met the lovely Mary from Tipperary while boarding a bus in the city and then paid her fare his bachelor days were over and they eventually settled in Dublin. However he always travelled up and down and later had a ‘holiday home’ in Killadream.

Strong in build and stature, Connie is remembered as a staunch footballer who could hold his own and could give as good as he got when games weren’t as genteel as they are today. When his playing days were over he was always available as a volunteer and an avid supporter of the Club.

Connie’s quick wit and retelling of a funny incident made him a favourite in any company, and it was always a pleasure to meet him with his warm welcome and ready smile.

A man of strong Christian faith he was also a proud family man and was devoted to his grandchildren taking great interest in their achievements and his passing has left a great void in the family circle.

Connie was predeceased by his parents Dick and Kate and brothers Peter and Michael and will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Mary, children Michael (Sile), Jackie (Padraig), John (Rose), and Conor, 11 grandchildren, niece Mairead, nephew P J reletives, neighbours and friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy.  Ar deis Dé go raibh a ainm dilis.
