Fr PJ is to become the new parish priest of Dromard
Parishioners turned out in large numbers on Saturday evening for Fr PJ Hughes' last Mass in St Joseph’s church, Loughduff before he moves down the road to Dromard.
Speaking before the mass his good friend and former college mate Fr Simon Cadam commended Fr PJ for his devotion to his ministry and his unfailing duty to bring the faith to people of all ages. As he wished him well in his new parish and thanked him for his time here he echoed the sentiments of parishioners who are sorry to see him going.
During his five years in Mullahoran he became ‘one of our own’ and his dedication to his congregation and the community especially the school children and the aged was very much hands-on.
Later the community centre was packed out for a tea party in his honour and no Party would be complete without a special cake and despite the poignant occasion there was a jovial atmosphere at this meet and greet occasion as MC Con Halton welcomed all where they enjoyed a cup of tea and a lavish spread.
It was also notable Con said that he was known only as Fr PJ during his time here.
A tribute was read by Raymond Brady detailing some of Fr PJ’s exploits during the five years and of course a mention of ‘keeping the church doors open’ once upon a time.

On behalf of the parishioners two of our senior citizens Betty Wilson and Mary Mulligan presented Fr PJ with an engraved plaque and also the proceeds of a voluntary collection from the various organisations and parishioners.
In reply Fr PJ said he was overwhelmed with the turnout and the occasion itself and that he would have liked to remain on as he had settled well and made many friends but the call came and so be it.

He spoke about future planning and encouraged all to be positive in their chosen way of life because no one knows what tomorrow brings as in his case. He thanked everyone for their acceptance of him as he knew no one when he came and thanked them for their friendliness and support as he leaves behind so many wonderful memories and good friends.
One of his great interests was the local community choir and as they sang ‘Lean On Me’ he joined in and his rendition of ‘What A Wonderful World’ was typical of his love of music and song.
And so we say God’s Blessing be with you Fr PJ we will miss you but in the new diocesan pastoral division which includes Dromard and Mullahoran our paths will surely cross.
