Minister Peter Burke launched Longford Works today, Monday, 30 September.

The launch which took place in Longford Golf Club was to celebrate the debut of Longford Works and their brand new remote working hubs.

The hubs are located across the county and can be found in Edgeworthstown, Ardagh, Abbeyshrule, Moyne, Longford Town, Moydow, and Mullinalaghta

The event saw key speakers from across County Longford such as The Cathaoirleach Cllr. Mark Casey, Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon.

Joan Mulvihill, former CEO of the Irish Internet Association spoke as a guest, as well as Caroline Nesbitt, owner and managing director of Designedly, who worked on this hub with Longford County Council.

And of course Minister Peter Burke also said a few words.

Minister Burke spoke with the Longford Leader regarding the hubs and his hopes for them.

“I think the connected hubs are a very good model,” Said the Minister ,“The strategy has been to roll them out in areas where people would have to work remotely.”

The plan is to have at least one centre within 5km of everyone from the Midwest to the West.

“We have about 366 connected hubs now in the country, Longford is front and centre to that response.” Said Minister Burke

‘Work smarter, Live better’ is the motto behind this project, a motto that is supported by Longford County Council's Chief Executive Paddy Mahon who also spoke with the Longford Leader at the event.

“We’d like to to think that a lot of people who have a long commute out of the county may possibly find that some of their work life can be spent in the county in one of our remote working hubs,” Said Mr. Mahon.

"And also allow people to have a better quality of life and still work and make a valuable contribution to their business,"

Joan Mulvihill, who was a guest speaker at the launch, showed her love for Longford as well as her own experience with remote working hubs.

“I worked in one of the original digital hubs for seven years,” she said “Of my 30 year working career they were the best seven years of my life.”

Meeting people in different professional areas really stood out to Ms Mulvihill.

“Most people in business are trying to think outside the box but if you meet people from a different box, you’ll get a different perspective.”
